The County Administrative Board has decided that the following general fishing regulations are to apply in the waters which the public are granted the use of on land owned by the state in the mountainous region.

  • lt is permitted to take out of the water and keep a total of 5 trout and graylings at the most per angler and day (e.g. either 5 graylings or 2 graylings and 3 trout).

  •

  • The bag-limit for salmon is set to 1 salmon per angler and day.

  •

  • The minimum length permitted for killing and keeping a fish is 30 cm for grayling, 35 cm for trout and 50 cm for salmon. The length is measured from the tip of the snout to the end of the tail fin.

  •

  • With a view to protecting the young stages of salmonid fish, fishing with natural baits (e.g. worms, maggots, shrimps, bait fish and suchlike) is forbidden in flowing waters. Any exceptions that may be made are specified in the information provided with the fishing permits.

  •

  • To protect trout in connection with their spawning, fishing for trout is prohibited in flowing waters between 1st September and 14th October. Any trout that is caught during this period must be released back into the water without fail, irrespective of its size and irrespective of whether the fish is injured or not.

  •

  • To protect graylings in connection with their spawning, fishing for graylings is prohibited between 10th May and 10th June in the local government areas of Gällivare, Jokkmokk and Arjeplog, and between 15th May and 15th June in the local government area of Kiruna. Any grayling that is caught during this period must be released back into the water without fail, irrespective of its size and irrespective of whether the fish is injured or not.

  •

  • To limit the catches taken out of smaller watercourses, jig-fishing is prohibited in flowing waters and stretches of smooth water in all watercourses except for the main rivers, i.e. except for the Pite, Kalix and Torne Rivers. The stretches of smooth water that this applies to are those shorter than 1 km and with a maximum width below 200 m.

  •

  • When fishing in the Lainio River, it is forbidden to kill female salmon because of the great reproduction value of the female fish.

  •

  • Fishing from boats is not permitted on the Kaitum River.

Special restrictions – waters with quota-based fishing – trolling
Moreover, in waters with special restrictions, waters with quota-based fishing, and when trolling, the regulations apply that are specified in the information material provided with the fishing permit for the local government area concerned and in the information material for the waters with quota-based fishing and for trolling.

Please remember that it is the angler who is always responsible for acquainting himself with the regulations that apply to the waters in which he or she is fishing.
